About Me

There isn’t much to tell. I’m just me. I really don’t know what I’d tell you about myself…I’d like to think I am what I write. But I’m perfectly imperfect…

I think a lot, probably dream more. I would like to talk less and be less of a critic. I’ve always dreamed of being a lady, but I’m afraid this tree will not bend any further in that direction.

My favorite pass-time is reading, no shocker there. My favorite time of the day are evenings when I can escape into my own little world…which consists of unwinding, reading, bubble baths and spending time with my family. I’m partial to sunsets and if I was an early riser I’m sure I’d love sunrises as well…

A lot of ppl have asked me how I can be so open about myself when I write…I write for myself and try not to think what other ppl will think about it. That only brings insecurity. Until I started writing about the Hutterites and my personal story, I had no idea there were so many ppl reading my patched-together sentences. It came as a surprise and did bring a measure of insecurity and fears. I do my best to ignore both.

Hobbies:
A few of my favorite things…spending time with my family, hugging children, going to booksales, forgetting the time in thrift shops, blogging undistracted, sleeping in behind mom’s back, staying home because of a sudden snow day, rainy days when there’s garden work, rainbows after the rain, hamburgers with fresh buns, pizza after a long, busy day, slow walks with my camera, talking on the phone with my girlfriends, watching the sunset, creamy tea with too much honey, shopping in clearance aisles, bubbles baths, watching my students succeed…
Favorite Books:
Authors: Anything by Jane Austen. Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Prentiss, J.R.R Tolkien, Elizabeth Elliot, Charlotte Mason, M.L. Montgomery, Michael and Debi Pearl, Janette Oke, Francine Rivers, Julie Klassen, Tamera Alexandra, Laura Shlessinger, Oswald Chambers,

Books: The Lamplighter, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, The Tale of Three Kings, Passion and Purity, Diary of a Teenage Girl series, I Will Follow, Children’s books!

Favorite Music:
Not much of a music person…just here and there. Right now I’d have to say The Phantom of the Opera has my attention.
Favorite Films:
BBC Production Films (Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens), Documentaries, Anne of Green Gables, Amazing Grace, Winnie the Pooh, Charlotte’s Web, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Andy Griffth Shows, The Lord of the Rings,
Favorite Quotes:
“Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.” Charlotte Mason

“In order to train up a child in the way that he should go, you have to walk in that way yourself.”

  • l.w.:

from a stranger, to a stranger: ‘i like you already’ :)

  • Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! It is so interesting to meet a Hutterite in person! I’ve read about half of your story so far, and plan to finish the rest soon. I also love your website! You sound like a very interesting person and a fantastic writer. I look forward to reading more of your story and reviews.

  • We have similar tastes in books! I really like BBC Production Films, too.

  • Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment on my book review. It’s always fun to meet a fellow reader online. I’ve had a nice time looking around here. I’ve looked through some of your reviews, and now I think I have even more books to add to my reading list.

  • I agree with l.w.! We have common interests…love pizza and sleeping in!! And reading, reading, reading (:

Hey, I had forgotten creative you really are…I’m blessed how much you live like you were dying…Enjoying the simplest things in life…truly amazing…you’ve been richly blessed. I beleive your life will be a great example to many who read about you! Lord Bless:)

  • Hi Lisa, you commented on my blog (Cappuccino Life). The answer to your question is “Yes”, that’s who I was talking about, but I don’t want to name them publically if I can avoid it because others have had very bad experiences after naming “them” in a not-praiseworthy context. lol

Very nice to “meet” you and I will surely be following your blog. :) Do you happen to know Rosann (Wurtz) Stahl?

  • Ladette:

    Lisa,

Thank you for visiting my blog and commenting. I look forward to being able to spend some time on your blog and “getting to know you” better. I had never even heard of Hutterites before 2007 when I was Taber during cornfest… I am very interested in your beliefs and lifestyle. Your comment (about the headcoverings) makes me wonder if another picture I have from that year is another “branch” of Hutterite (the woman is dressed similarly, but has a plain black headcovering). Well, I must go for now… God bless!

  • Thanks for stopping in at my blog. I love this blog of yours. We have a lot in common as far as reading and hobbies. I think I’ll be checking in once in a while…

  • Lydia Wollman:

Hi Lisa, we “met” on the phone the other day.:) I don’t know if I mentioned this but I love to read too. Maybe too much if that’s possible.I still have your suggestion in mind, and mentally I have written a lot about the subject, now just getting it down on paper…
I will keep in touch, have a great day and God bless you. Lydia

  • Barbara Brooks:

I enjoy your writing so much. I just wish you could be reviewing books by real Anabaptists (Christian Aid Ministries, CLP, Pathway, Rod and Staff) instead of these commercialized books. Many are very well written and have deep messages.

I hope you’ll write a novel or biography of your own and get it published. You’ve got a great writing style, just some of your word usage and word endings occasionally show that English is your second language.

I don’t know how well you write in German, but there’s such curiosity about Hutterites in Austria and Germany that I think people would buy a book (novel or true story) about Hutterite life. They are so closed to Christianity over there that it might set some people to searching for God.

I’m glad you stayed a Hutterite. The grass is greener on the other side, but it’s a good way to live, as long as the colony uses what it has to help the poor and serves Christ wholeheartedly.
